Museum of engineering and technology in Krakow (Muzeum Inzynierii Miejskiej), Poland

The Museum of Engineering and Technology in Krakow – one of the flagship EU Funded site in Krakow, financed within POIiŚ fund which is financed from the ERDF and is under the department of DG Regio.

The museum was founded in 1998, located at 15 St. Wawrzyniec Street in Krakow, in the building of the former depot of the first narrow-gauge electric tram. The museum collects exhibits related to the development of public transport, power plants, gasworks, municipal services, and historical technical monuments. Until March 11, 2022, the institution was called the Museum of Municipal Engineering.

We speak to conservator Magdalena Jabłońska (34), for the promotion of the department.

This museum, founded in 1998, was under construction between 2016 and 2023. For this, the museum had an injection of EU Cohesion funding of 16 million zloty, 58 million zloty from the Polish program and de rest of the money came from the city Krakow.

The EU money was used for the renovation of two trams, two cars and some motorcycles. In the rebuilding of the former bus and tram depot there were also some underground transformations; the space underneath the museum is a part of the museum now, where you can see a relic of an ash receptacle. Also, there is a chill zone and there are changing rooms.

Because of the modernisation, the museum now boasts an exhibition twice the size of his previous capacity. It is the first large-scale Polish presentation of engineering, narrating the story of how development of urban technology satisfies the most pressing human needs. The museum shows in timelines how everything is connected: the first vaccines, the invention of electricity, the exploitation of Africa in a large scale.

The museum shows over 3.000 objects, and is still expending the collection.

With 2.000 daily visitors it is a very popular museum, especially under Polish people, who want to know about the history of their country.
